About Advance Advocacy
VISION
The vision of Advance Advocacy is a public policy arena where all nonprofit
organizations are actively engaged in ensuring that federal, state and local laws and polices reflect
the needs of the people they serve, as well as those of the broader society. Civic engagement,
advocacy and lobbying are viewed as noble endeavors and valued as "must do' activities by all
charities and tax-exempt organizations.
MISSION
Our mission is to advance advocacy through consulting for change. We assist nonprofit organizations
in developing public policy goals and strategies; identifying stakeholders, partners and coalitions;
creating messages and materials and, providing volunteer, board and staff motivation and training.
LEADERSHIP
Advance Advocacy is led by Diane Canova, who has over 20 years of experience in nonprofit
management, strategic planning, public policy, government relations and lobbying, with a focus on
health and social services issues, including research, prevention, access to health care, disability
and rehabilitation, acute and chronic disease health care services.

• Automatic defibrillators in airplanes and public places
• Federal funding for physical education
• Increased grassroots lobby day participation from 88 to 500
• Enhanced media focus on tobacco control, NIH and CDC
• Increased funding for heart disease, HIV/AIDS and substance abuse prevention and treatment

• Board Chair, Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest
• Co-founded the SCA Coalition and Research to Prevention
• Led Effective National Action to Control Tobacco (ENACT)
• National Health Council’s Government Relations Affinity Group

Legislative and Legal background: Legislative Director and Subcommittee Counsel, U.S. House of
Representatives. Juris Doctor, Brandeis School of Law, University of Louisville; worked for Legal Aid
Society.
